The statue of former captain of the Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebirds Laura Geitz was unveiled at its new home at the Queensland State Netball Centre (QSNC) on Sunday 19 May by Laura Geitz  and The Hon. Mick de Brenni, Minister for Sport.

The statue’s relocation allows fans to join current and former players to commemorate the former netball star’s incredible contribution to the sport while attending each home game.

Ms Geitz said she was humbled by the statue and its relocation and thanked everyone involved.

“This fantastic new facility is a win for netball in Queensland and I hope that it inspires and attracts more players and fans to the Game for generations to come. I am humbled by the honour and  kindness people have shown in acknowledging my contribution to netball,” Ms Geitz said.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said moving the statue will ensure the next generation of netballers can continue to be inspired by Laura’s incredible legacy.

“Laura Geitz is a legend of Queensland netball, a Commonwealth Games medallist, world championship winner and a truly inspirational leader who captained the Firebirds to three premiership titles,” Mr de Brenni said.

“The statue was initially unveiled at BEC, the site of the Firebirds’ sensational 2015 grand final win, however it seems appropriate that the state’s first netball statue take pride of place at the home of netball, to inspire athletes and fans every time they visit,” he said.

Laura is one of the most highly regarded players in Australian Netball history, leading both the Firebirds and the Diamonds to a number of victories.

In recognition of her contribution to Australian Netball, the statue was first unveiled in May 2017 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, marking the first female athlete to be recognised with a life-sized statue in Queensland.
